Product Goal

The Product Goal is the commitment for the Product Backlog, introduced in Scrum Guide 2020. It describes the future state of the product and provides focus for the Scrum Team.

Purpose

  • Gives the Scrum Team a shared long-term objective beyond a single Sprint
  • Each Sprint should move the product closer to the Product Goal
  • Provides transparency about where the product is heading

Ownership

  • Owned by the Product Owner, who defines and communicates it
  • Developers work toward it via Sprint Goals and Increments

Relationship to Other Commitments

  • Product Backlog → Product Goal
  • Sprint Backlog → Sprint Goal
  • Increment → Definition of Done

Each artifact has a commitment to ensure transparency and focus. If a Product Goal becomes obsolete, the Product Owner defines a new one.
